Stairlifts Truro – Stairlifts Cornwall

Castle Comfort Stair Lifts are heading back 'up country' today.  We've left Penzance behind and are heading for Truro, the only city in Cornwall and the most southerly city in the UK.

If you are looking for a stairlift in Cornwall either for yourself or a family member, look no further than Castle Comfort Stair Lifts.  We are the national agent for all makes of stairlift and we can help you choose either a brand new straight or curved one or even a reconditioned one.

Just watch our video and then give your local office a call for more information on 01395 349198.
On with our tour of Truro and to meet some Truronians as the people from this city in Cornwall are known!  We've travelled 27 miles from our last stop Penzance but find ourselves closer to previous stops Falmouth (10 miles away) and St Austell (14.5 miles away).

Truro is a typically pretty Cornish town with cobbled streets and some Georgian architecture.  It is also a port once important in the fishing industry back in the 14th century, secure in its almost inland location, some 9 miles from the coast.  It is up a creek where the Rivers Kenwyn and Allen converge to form the River Truro later joining the River Fal and on into the large natural harbour of Carrick Roads mentioned in our tour of Falmouth.

The town later became important in the local tin mining industry as an official assaying and stamping of locally mined tin and copper.

Truro is now the retail centre for Cornwall with a wide variety of national chain stores, independent shops and markets.  It is also quite a cultural centre with many community events occurring throughout the year such as a half marathon, a city carnival which includes a parade of course, a circus, music and other performances, fireworks and food and drink fairs.  Christmas time sees a Winter Festival which includes a parade of Paper Lanterns which many of the community have made.

Notable Truro residents
Truro seems to have 'given birth to' many people who have made it into the realms of the well-known from missionaries, composers, musicians and a physician from earlier times to a host of cricketers and other sports persons now.  Here are just some of its famous sons and a couple of daughters:

Grandmaster chess player Michael Adams was born in Truro

Also footballers Craig Alcock who plays for Peterborough United

and Matthew Etherington who now plays for Stoke City – HQ of Castle Comfort Stair Lifts, national agent for all stairlift manuacturers is also from the town.
Truro seems to have bred a whole team of cricketers including Paul Berryman, Nicholas Carter, Neil Curnow, Ryan Driver, Ben Frazer, Matthew Gitsham and Robert Brooks; astronomer Edwin Dunkin was also from Truro; our first woman, Helen Glover a silver medal rower was also born in Truro as was another rower Annabel Vernon.

Author, artist and lecturer Adam Grose also hails from this city;

Lady body builder Joanna Thomas is also from here and well known author Robert Goddard lives in Truro.

The drummer Roger Taylor of the band Queen is also from here.

Here at Castle Comfort Stair Lifts we hope you've enjoyed this armchair tour of Truro in Cornwall.  Remember if you or a loved one is looking for a stairlift, we can advise on the most suitable one for your needs.

If you need help funding the purchase or a 0% finance option, we can also advise. Please give us a call on 01395 349198 to discuss just how we can help you.

Or if you are a commercial venture looking for passenger lifts or wheelchair lifts, Castle Comfort Stair Lifts are happy to advise and supply.  Please call us on the same number.

Stairlifts Penzance – Cornwall Stairlifts

As Castle Comfort Stair Lifts continue their journey south in Cornwall, we reach Penzance some 39 miles from Falmouth in Cornwall and 300 miles west-southwest of London and 75 miles west of Plymouth in Devon.  Penzance is just 10 miles from Lands End the furthest southerly point in the UK.

If you are looking for information about stairlift suppliers or funding in this area of Cornwall, Castle Comfort Stair Lifts can help.  As the national agents for all manufacturers of stairlifts we can supply a suitable lift for your personal use.

And don't forget that we can also supply purpose built wheelchair lifts and passenger lifts if you are looking for commercial versions (DDA compliant).  If you would like more information about either option, please contact our local office on 01395 349198.

Let's continue our look around Penzance.  Sheltered by Mount's Bay, Penzance faces onto the English Channel with the largest UK fishing port of Newlyn to its west and the parish of Madron with whom it has close ties to its north.  This location ensures Penzance's temperate climate which means it is milder than most of the rest of the UK.

Named after the church that stood on the headland – Penzance means Holy Headland in Cornish – over a thousand years ago, Penzance existed as a small settlement from pre-historic times.  Its location also has meant that over the centuries, Penzance has come under attack by the Spanish and pirates.  And notably by a tsunami in the 18th century!  The tsunami travelled from an earthquake epicentre in Lisbon, Portugal some 1,000 miles away bringing an eight foot surge of the sea around Penzance.  The surge was quick and receded quickly too and no damage was recorded.

Penzance really began to flourish and grow in the 15th – 17th centuries after being granted charters for markets and fairs, for permissions to charge harbour dues and granted the status of 'borough'.  The arrival of the railway in the mid 19th century was good not only for the local economy but meant Penzance was accessible to tourists and those suffering less than good health were attracted by the mild climate.

If Penzance has attracted you to retire to the area or if you have been lucky enough to live here all your life, but now need some help to get about, Castle Comfort Stair Lifts have some solutions.  We can advise on the type of stairlift and also part exchange your old one for a newer version.  Castle Comfort can also point you in the direction of stairlift grants or 0% credit options.  Remember you can use our £50 voucher towards your purchase.

Tourist destinations
Many landmarks and tourist destinations surround Penzance which operates a ferry and a helicopter service to one of the favourites, the 'area of outstanding natural beauty', the nearby Isles of Scilly.

Mousehole another fishing port, Marazion, St Michael's Mount and of course Lands End are all close enough to make Penzance your holiday headquarters.  The area is also well known for its artistic community attracting over the years artists of many mediums to settle here.
John Barlow - Artist
In fact, the Newlyn School was used to describe a group of artists who settled in the area in the late 19th/early 20th Century.  Penzance itself has numerous galleries and a centre, Acorn Arts Centre for theatre, film and performance.

Who do you know from Penzance?
One of the most famous inhabitants of Penzance was Sir Humphrey Davy; this worthy chemist is best known for his invention of the miner's lamp aka the Davy lamp but also discovered laughing gas and with Michael Faraday proved that diamonds were made of pure carbon.

Actress Thandie Newton was brought up in Penzance

1960's model Jean Shrimpton and her partner now own The Abbey Hotel

Cornish & England cricketer Jack Richards was born here as was Maria Bramwell mother of the famous Brontés; as well as Stanley Johnson father of Boris.

Comedian Sue Perkins lives in Penzance.

There's no doubt about it Penzance in Cornwall is an attractive place to live.  So that you can enjoy your time in this beautiful part of the country to the full, let Castle Comfort Stair Lifts help with your mobility.

Watch our video and then call your local office on 01395 349198 for advice on the purchase or part-exchange of a stairlift – or anything else you need to know about stairlifts or other equipment to help you.

Stairlifts Torquay – Stairlifts Devon

Here we go again. A slightly longer journey this time coming up from Truro in Cornwall and crossing the Devon border and on to Torquay, a journey of some 85 miles.

Here in the beautiful West Country if you or a loved one is looking for a stairlift, we can point you in the right direction! Castle Comfort Stair Lifts has a local office in the area to answer all your questions. Basically as national agents for all stairlift manufacturers we can advise on the right kind of stairlift to suit you and your budget.

Take a look at our video where our founder Keith tells you all about Castle Comfort and then give your local office a call on 01395 349198.

Meanwhile back to Torquay, once reliant on fishing for its economy just like nearby Brixham but now a definite seaside resort known as the English Riviera for its healthy and temperate climate and its likeness to Montpellier on the French Riviera. The Victorians were the first to really recognise its potential as a resort although it had been a favourite place for The Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars when ships docked and their crew came ashore.

Agatha Christie, the famous crime writer best known for her Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple stories, lived in Torquay and you can now enjoy a tour of the town dedicated to her life and work, Agatha Christie’s Mile.
Torquay has many other tourist attractions which include its seafront and everything associated with an English seaside resort. Kents Caverns are another; this cave system is Britain’s most important Stone Age site and one of archaeological and geological interest. It attracts aver 80,000 tourists a year and Agatha Christie was known to visit as were King George V, Beatrix Potter and Haile Selassie, one time emperor of Ethiopia.

You can also visit Living Coasts at Torquay, a coastal zoo. What can you see here? Well the most likely exhibits are sea birds and other coastal wildlife. There is a giant Aviary which houses many of the birds and also aquariums where you can see Sting-Ray and other fish; in the free flying aviary you might glimpse birds as well as animals: sea ducks, pied avocet, redshanks, black-knecked stilts, ruffs and terns as well as African and Macaroni penguins and South American Fur Seals. There is also a tropical mangrove swamp and a collection of underwater viewing areas. There is also a ‘local coasts’ exhibit showing off local wildlife such as seahorses and starfish.

If you are part of the ‘local coastal life’ of Torquay but not as nimble as you once were, maybe Castle Comfort Stair Lifts can help? If your natural habitat is less than accessible, talk to us about a stairlift so that you can get up and down those stairs – we certainly won’t make an exhibit of you!

Call us on 01395 349198 to discuss how we can help.

Of course if you are a business looking for a commercial passenger or wheelchair lift (DDA compliant), Castle Comfort Stair Lifts can help you too.

Famous visitors
Speaking of tourist type businesses in Torquay did you know that it was whilst John Cleese was staying in Torquay for the filming – here and in nearby Paignton - of the classic Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1969 -73) that he had inspiration for the popular sitcom Fawlty Towers (1975-9); in the 1970’s several episodes of The Goodies were also filmed in Torquay.

Another famous visitor is Banksy the artist who painted a mural on the wall of the Grosvenor Hotel of a child drawing a robot ...

Elizabeth Barrett Browning stayed here ‘for her health’ and Oscar Wilde wrote A Woman of No Importance whilst staying in the area.

Born in Torquay
1960’s comedian Peter Cook hails from Torquay; Cook famously partnered Dudley Moore in a series of TV programmes.

Current comedienne Miranda Hart was also born in Torquay; as was cinematographer Roger Deakins known for his cinema work with the Coen Brothers. Another famous daughter from Torquay is high-earning model Lily Cole.

We hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about some of the delights that Torquay holds. Please remember to give Castle Comfort Stair Lifts a call on 01395 349198 if you need some advice about stairlifts. Our website has comparison information and if it all seems a bit daunting, there are funding grants you can apply to as well as 0% finance options. We can also supply reconditioned models or take your old one in part-exchange – the options are limitless and there’s still the £50 voucher which you can use towards the purchase.

Contact your local office for more information.

Stairlifts Exmouth - Exceptional Exmouth in Devon

Continuing our West Country tour, today we head for Exmouth in Devon.
Exmouth is home to the local office of Castle Comfort Stairlifts for all your stair and passenger lift needs.  So whether it is your personal home mobility needs for a stairlift, new or refurbished, or a commercial business needing passenger or wheelchair lifts that need to meet DDA Compliancy, please give us a call on 01395 349198.

But first let's learn a little more about the area.  As well as Castle Comfort Stair lifts local 'home', it is also home to the Exmouth Lifeboat Station which is the base for rescue and searches for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in Devon.

There are a few other notable celebrities and companies with connections to Exmouth.  For instance did you know that Radio 1 DJ Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart hails from here?

Or that actress Pauline Collins perhaps best known for her role as Shirley Valentine on stage and screen and film role starring with Patrick Swayze in City of Joy was born here?

Or that Pam St Clement – Pat on Eastenders –was brought up by a foster family in the area?

Famously Sir Walter Raleigh sailed from Exmouth and Lady Nelson, Lord Nelson's estranged wife lived here.

Exmouth is also known as a pirate base!  Forerunners of Captain Jack Sparrow, back in the 15th Century William Kyd based his pirate operation out of Exmouth; John Nutt was born in Lympstone near Exmouth in the 17th Century and took to the seas as a pirate both off the Canadian coast and the west coast of England.

What and where is Exmouth?
Exmouth is a seaside town with 2 miles of golden sands and also a port situated on the banks of the River Exe some 10 miles south of Devon's County Town Exeter and thirty three miles from Plymouth (or 104 miles walking along the South West Coastal Path if you prefer).

Both the sea and the river Exe give Exmouth its character and of course its 2 mile stretch of sand.  Nearby Dawlish Warren on the opposite bank of the river and surrounding National Trust owned land at Orcombe also make it a popular tourist destination for its water sports, bird-watching opportunities and walking.  This part of the southern coast is particularly beautiful and Exmouth sits at the Western end of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site which comes around the Devon coastline into Dorset finishing at Poole.

Of course you're not quite Jurassic yet even if you have retired to this beautiful part of Devon!  But if getting around has become a problem especially in your own home, then you need to contact Castle Comfort Stair lifts who have all the low-down on this form of mobility help.

We can advise you on the type of stairlift best suited to you; we do part-exchange if you need to update your current stairlift and we can point you in the direction of funding for grants or 0% finance, whichever suits your circumstances and needs best.

If you would like to know more please call your very local office on 01395 349198

Nearby places of interest
Of course you can't come to Devon without touring the beautiful countryside.  As well as nearby craggy Dartmoor there are also a number of coastal venues and areas of natural beauty to visit.
Dawlish Warren on the opposite bank of the River Exe is a small seaside town; it has a natural sand spit which is home to a Nature Reserve and the golf course.  Dawlish just a few miles around the coast heading south was originally a fishing village and is now another seaside town which mainly consists of holiday accommodation.  It is also the home of Black Swans brought from Western Australia and now living in a small bird sanctuary here.  Both resorts have won the Blue Flag for best quality bathing waters.

Going off in the opposite direction from Exmouth you'll find Budleigh Salterton which lies at the mouth of the River Otter.  Like Exmouth it is on that South West Coastal Path and is part of the Jurassic Coast.
Budleigh as it is affectionately known has connections with the famous too: it's the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and the place where Sir John Millais painted Raleigh as a boy;

Broadcasters Andrew Marr and Sue Lawley, actor Reg Varney and Muffin the Mule puppeteer Sally McNally all have connections to Budleigh.

We're at the end of our short armchair tour of Exmouth and the surrounding district in Devon.  With almost a quarter of the population of Devon of retirement age – the largest percentage in the country – we want to be sure you are aware of the help you can get from Castle Comfort Stairlifts.  The chances are that if you've found this blog that you are interested to know more about who we are and how we can help you.

Just watch the video at the top of the page from Castle Comfort Stairlifts founder about how we got started and then contact us for details of stairlifts whether it is a brand new one or whether you wish to upgrade your current stairlift for a more modern and stylish model, we can help.  Get in touch with your local office on 01395 349198 and don't forget you can use the £50 off voucher towards your stairlift from us.

Stairlifts St Austell
Cornwall Stairlifts that suit you to a T(cup)

Welcome to Cornwall and the town of St Austell some 40 miles south of recent stop-off Plymouth in Devon.  Yes we've headed further south for our continuing tour of the West Country.

Castle Comfort Stairlifts has a branch in the West Country to serve all Devonians and Cornish residents.  With our nationwide representation of all stairlift manufacturers we can supply you with straight or curved, new., reconditioned and rental stairlifts.

Watch our video to hear Keith our founder explain who and what we can do; any questions you still need answered please call your local office on 01395 349198.

OK let's take a look at St Austell the largest town in Cornwall which is bordered by the Celtic Sea and part of the Atlantic Ocean (to the north and west),  the English Channel (to the south) and to the east by the county of Devon.

The main sources of income for the St Austell area in southern Cornwall are still China Clay one of the old industries of Cornwall along with tin mining and fishing.  China Clay only employs a fraction of the people it did in the early 20th Century but still does well. The best china tea cups are made from Cornish Clay.

St Austell's other income comes mainly from tourism which attracts people to the area for its beaches, the Eden Project just 3 miles from the town and the Lost Gardens of Heligan restored to their former glory in the 1990's.

Lost Gardens of Heligan

Nearby beaches include the popular Carlyon Bay with its 2 miles of sand, Charlestown for sand, pebbles and a harbour for Tall Ships, watersport haven Pentewan and Polkerris a sandy sheltered beach not far from the Elizabethan house Menabilly the long-time home of author Daphne du Maurier, and the Manderly of Rebecca.
Daphne du Maurier

Local brewery St Austell Brewery is also a source of income and has been producing local beer for 160 years and continues to supply local pubs.

The Eden Project deserves a mention all of its own!  From an idea conceived by Tim Smit, the project has been built in an old disused china clay pit.  An educational charitable trust, The Eden Project houses the world's largest greenhouse and plants from around the world.  But the Eden Project is more than plants; it hosts conferences and educational workshops, music and other events like a Halloween disco and an Ice Rink for the winter months and has a great café using produce from its gardens and other local sources.  It's more than worth a visit!  And it's accessible to those of you less than mobile on your feet!

Remember that Castle Comfort Stairlifts also provides other modes of transport from wheelchairs to bath lifts to adjustable beds as well as our famous range of stairlifts.  As the national agent for all makes of stairlift we can certainly be sure to find the right one at the right price for you.

We even offer you a £50 off for first timers using Castle Comfort and can advise on grants and 0% purchase options.  If you would like to know more please contact your local West Country office on 01395 349198.

St Austell's Famous sons

Andy Reed a former Cornish Rugby union player was born in St Austell;

 Andy Reed

English cricketer John Martin was born here too somewhat earlier though and cricketers Chris Hunkin and Christopher Lovell have carried on the tradition.  Another notorious cricketer Miles Gifford also hails from St Austell – he was hanged for murdering his parents in 1953!  Another sport, another sportsman Nigel Martyn ex England goal keeper who played for Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Everton was also born in St Austell.

Nigel Martyn

Robin Davey musician, record producer and musical director was born here, actor Robert Duncan best known for his role in Drop the Dead Donkey too;

Robert Duncan

You can't mention Cornwall without a minister or two; perhaps the most famous was Samuel Drew a Methodist Theologian was also born in St Austell in the 19th century.

The Cornish language
Did you know that Cornwall has its own language which is a form of Celtic and which was spoken throughout the county before the Anglo Saxons arrived.  The Cornish language (Kernewek) shares about 80% of its basics with Breton, a Celtic language spoken in Brittany.  Kernewek is now being taught in some schools again and the Cornish people have had opportunities to register themselves as Cornish rather than English in this year's census.

Don't worry if you're newly retired to the area, Castle Comfort Stairlifts speak English!  You call us on 01395 349198 if you need a personal stairlift or if you are a commercial organisation looking for passenger lifts and wheelchair lifts to be DDA Compliant.  We can source a large range of products from all manufacturers.

For personal stairlifts we can point you in the directions of grants to help with the expense.  One thing is for certain we can definitely help you to make your life better with one of our stairlifts.
